Exploring the Wonders of Laoag: A Journey Through Culture, History, and Scenic Beauty

Laoag City, the capital of Ilocos Norte, beckons travelers with its unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. I set out from Manila, eager to experience the wonders this northern gem offers. Join me as I recount my journey through Laoag’s scenic roads, historic sites, and unforgettable landscapes.

Setting Off from Manila: The Journey Begins

In the bustling evening air of Manila, I waited at the Florida Bus Lines terminal, ready to embark on my overnight journey to Laoag. The familiar chaos faded as the bus left the city, replaced by the tranquility of North Luzon Expressway. Passing by quiet towns under the starlit sky, I soon drifted off to sleep, dreaming of Laoag’s adventures.

Day 1: Discovering Laoag’s Historic Landmarks

Historic Paoay Church in Laoag, Ilocos Norte

Paoay Church (San Agustin Church)
My first stop was the iconic Paoay Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its earthquake-resistant baroque architecture—reinforced with massive buttresses—immediately struck me. Here, history, spirituality, and architectural genius converge, paying homage to the resilience of the Ilocano people.

Paoay Lake
Nearby, I found Paoay Lake, a serene body of water with an intriguing legend. It’s said that a prosperous town once stood where the lake now lies. Standing by the lakeside, I soaked in the peaceful atmosphere and reflected on this story.

Malacañang of the North
Next, I visited the Malacañang of the North, the former residence of the Marcos family. Now a museum, this mansion offers a glimpse into Philippine history, with views of Paoay Lake that are simply breathtaking.

Day 2: Exploring Laoag’s City Center

Sinking Bell Tower
This tower, known for sinking a bit into the ground each year, remains a landmark of resilience. Its fascinating descent adds a unique historical layer to the city center.

St. William’s Cathedral
A short walk from the tower, St. William’s Cathedral is a beautiful, spacious sanctuary. The quiet elegance of its facade offers a moment of calm, a reminder of Laoag’s enduring blend of old and new.

Museo Ilocos Norte
I made my way to Museo Ilocos Norte, which showcases the region’s heritage through a vast collection of artifacts. The museum’s insights into local life and traditions deepened my appreciation for Ilocano culture.

Day 3: Natural Adventures Await

La Paz Sand Dunes
No Laoag experience is complete without the thrill of the La Paz Sand Dunes. After a thrilling 4x4 ride across the undulating dunes, I tried sandboarding down steep slopes, an experience that was both exhilarating and memorable.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse
Later, I journeyed to the Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in Burgos, a historic structure perched on a hill overlooking the West Philippine Sea. The panoramic views from the top were worth every step, and the sea breeze made it the perfect place to reflect on my journey.

Day 4: Farewell to Laoag’s Heritage and Scenic Spots

Aurora Park and the Tobacco Monopoly Monument
My final day took me to Aurora Park, where locals mingled and vendors sold snacks. At the center stands the Tobacco Monopoly Monument, a tribute to the region’s historical role in the tobacco trade.

La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc Church and Juan Luna Shrine
In Badoc, I visited the La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc Church, home to a revered image of the Virgin Mary, and the Juan Luna Shrine, celebrating the life of the famed Filipino painter. These stops provided a meaningful conclusion to my cultural exploration.

My trip to Laoag was a journey of discovery—every landmark, every story deepened my understanding of Ilocos Norte’s rich history and beauty. I left Laoag with cherished memories, eager to share this experience with others who may feel inspired to explore this extraordinary city.
